Travelers visiting India require to be in possession of a valid passport to enter the country. The Government of India recently implemented the e-Tourist visa or eTV. When first implemented it was called visa on arrival, however that caused a bit of confusion and the term was changed. Citizens/ passport holders of about 42 countries can apply online for the visa to visit India either for Tourism or short term travel.
Travelers to India from any one of the countries as per the Government of India can complete the entire process online. They do not require to send in their original passports and documents for the processing. The eTourist visa approval is issued in advance electronically prior to the travel to India but the actual visa is issued in the passport upon arrival into India.
The eTV is for travelers whose purpose of visiting India is tourism, sight-seeing, a casual visit to meet friends or relatives, etc. Applicants of Pakistani origin however are required to apply directly with the Embassy / Consulate and not the online visa.
Once the online request for the e-Visa is submitted and processed through VisaBuzz and the approval received, the approval information will be sent to the traveler via email. The document will require to be printed and carried along with the passport when traveling to India. When the traveler arrives in India, they will need to have biometric information taken at the airport and their passport will be stamped.
The eTV is issued for single entry with a duration of stay of up to 30 days. A maximum of two Indian Tourist e-visas can be issued within one year.
